Brake Repair: Missed out on Brake Service?
If you suspect any problems with your car's braking system, schedule a brake service as soon as possible. This is your vehicle's most critical safety system so don't put off any needed brake repair. Don't miss out on regular brake service! Keep your vehicle under control and functioning safely in all conditions
If you have missed regular brake service, take your vehicle for a short drive and pay attention to how it performs, paying special attention to how your vehicle comes to a stop. Then answer the questions below:
- How far does your vehicle travel before coming to a complete stop? If you're sliding through stop signs, either your brakes need adjusting or they need new linings.
- Does your vehicle pull to one side? This could be caused by a stuck caliper or a fluid leak.
- Does the brake pedal pulsate up and down when you step on it? This is usually caused by brakes overheating.
- Does the steering wheel shake when you come to a stop? If so, your front discs may need to be professionally machined or replaced.
- Do your brakes squeal? A high-pitched squeal can occur for several reasons--the linings are worn and need to be replaced, the drum or disc needs to be machined, the front disc pads are loose or missing clips, the hardware that attaches the calipers is worn, or the use of inferior linings.
- Do you hear a grinding noise that you can feel in the pedal? If so, stop driving immediately and have your vehicle towed to a brake repair shop. Grinding is caused by excessively worn linings, allowing the metal part of the pad to come in contact with the disc or drum. Further driving can quickly damage the discs or drums, the most expensive mechanical parts of the braking system.
- Does your vehicle bounce up and down as you come to a stop? The shock absorbers may need to be replaced.
If any of your answers indicate that you have a problem, take care of any necessary brake repair immediately. Don't risk the safety of your passengers or other motorists.
