It seems that many drivers do not know what regular maintenance should be done on a car. As long as their car gets them from Point A to Point B, they may never think about vehicle maintenance items. Plus, their monthly budget may not allow for seemingly unnecessary items. Although it’s true that keeping up with vehicle maintenance is an expense, the potential costs of damage that can happen in your vehicle’s engine, transmission, and suspension due to lack of maintenance is much greater. Extending the time between service intervals doesn’t really save you money.
Just as we humans go to our medical doctors for physical check-ups, so your vehicle needs a visit to your auto shop. Preventative vehicle maintenance makes sure your car stays in good health! Ask your auto mechanic about a multi-point inspection. It is a good way to find out if there are any issues with your car that need to be taken care of. Here are the most common items included in that inspection:
- Oil changed as necessary and the filter replaced
- Tire service--rotation, alignment, balancing, air pressure (including the spare and jack)
- Car battery—it should be fully charged and able to hold a charge
- Fluid levels checked, including antifreeze/coolant, brake fluid, power steering fluid, and windshield washer reservoir
- Air filter inspected to make sure it is not clogged
- Horn working loud and clear
- Windshield wipers in good working order to make sure the windshield is clear
- Lights (exterior and interior) are clean and bright so you can see and be seen
- Air conditioner and heater—the condenser is circulating the air, keeping the windows free of fog, and providing a comfortable ride.
