Vehicle Maintenance: Slow down Aging!
Is your car getting old too fast? You can help it age gracefully by following a routine of good car maintenance. Proper vehicle maintenance can extend the life and safety of your vehicle. Plus, advances in technology have allowed vehicle owners to keep their vehicles on the road longer than ever.
Your car doesn't have to be a classic to have a lot of miles. The average driver puts about 12,000 miles on a vehicle each year. Thus, an eight year old vehicle could have an odometer reading of almost 100,000 miles. Once a vehicle reaches 75,000, it's time to be a little more pro-active with vehicle maintenance, even with today's technology and quality.
Here are a few tips to slow down the aging process of your vehicle, or even bring it back to life:
- Find a good auto shop
- Change the oil and filter as recommended in your owner's manual
- Inspect belts and hoses for wear and visible cracks--replace as needed
- Inspect the brake system for leaks and wear
- Check tire tread for uneven wear patterns
- Check the tire pressure on a weekly basis
- Pay attention to warning signs and sounds
- Get regular tune up services
- Check all fluid levels (such as power-steering, brakes, transmission, radiator coolant, and windshield washer) and top off as needed at every oil change
- Protect your vehicle from the elements as much as possible
- Inspect and lubricate U-joints, CV-joints and wheel bearings every few months
- Replace wiper blades as needed
- Check the suspension system and alignment every few months
- Make sure headlights and brake lights are working properly
- Keep your vehicle clean, both inside and outside, including the undercarriage
To keep your "beloved" car or truck running strong and looking good well beyond 75,000 to 100,000 miles, adopt a program of consistent preventative vehicle maintenance.
