Express Auto Service & Repair

Next to their personal residence, a vehicle may be the second largest investment for many drivers. It is important to establish and follow a maintenance plan, sometimes called a tune up, to protect that automotive investment. However, in today's modern vehicles, a tune up isn't the same as it was years ago. The manufacturer's recommended maintenance schedule (found in your owner's manual), typically includes what they still call a "car tune up." To ensure you get the maximum reliability and safety from the vehicle you depend upon and have invested in, make sure it is part of your maintenance schedule.

Yesterday's Tune Up –

  • A tune up in older vehicles that use a distributor; replace the distributor cap, distributor rotor and ignition wires in accordance with the manufacturer's recommended schedule. This will usually include replacing spark plugs as well.

Today's Tune Up –

  • In today's vehicle, a tune up is the orderly process of inspection, diagnosis, testing, and adjustment on a regular basis to maintain peak engine performance or restore the engine to original operating efficiency.

Many engines in today's vehicles don't have distributors anymore, but use a direct ignition system (DIS). Thus, ignition systems have become much more reliable over the years. The need for a distributor is eliminated as these systems can either mount one ignition coil on each spark plug, or share one coil for two plugs.

Remember: For improved fuel economy, longer engine life and cleaner air to breathe, a car tune up is an investment that will keep paying dividends. Ask your local auto mechanic for professional advice about the proper maintenance schedule for your specific vehicle and driving situation.
