- In today's vehicle, a tune up is the orderly process of inspection, diagnosis, testing, and adjustment on a regular basis to maintain peak engine performance or restore the engine to original operating efficiency.
Many engines in today's vehicles don't have distributors anymore, but use a direct ignition system (DIS). Thus, ignition systems have become much more reliable over the years. The need for a distributor is eliminated as these systems can either mount one ignition coil on each spark plug, or share one coil for two plugs.
