Express Auto Service & Repair

If you are like most vehicle owners, the words "transmission repair" strikes fear in your heart. All you can see are big dollar signs flying out the window! Unfortunately, the average driver knows little about transmission service. But, by doing a little research about the methods of transmission repair, your confusion and fear will diminish. As an informed consumer, you can make a better decision regarding whether your vehicle requires a minor in-car-repair transmission service or a major transmission repair in which the unit is removed from the vehicle.

  • In-Car Repairs – A couple of problems can be taken care of with the transmission remaining in the vehicle, less costly than a complete overhaul or replacement.
  • Improper shifting: A computer-controlled unit can either receive the wrong signals, or it may not react properly to a command. This problem can typically be resolved by simply resetting the computer. In a non-computer-controlled transmission, adjustments to the throttle cable or vacuum modulator (make sure there are no vacuum leaks) can be made. In some older transmissions, "slipping" can be resolved by adjusting the bands.
  • Resealing: External fluid leaks can be resealed with the transmission remaining in the car. But if the front seat needs to be replaced, the unit must first be removed from the vehicle in order to gain access to the leak (which is going to be more costly).
  • Out-of-the-Car Repairs – Some types of transmission repair can only be resolved by removing the unit from the vehicle. Because these repairs require more hours of labor and involve other components that may need to be replaced, they will be more costly.
  • Rebuilding: During the rebuilding process, the transmission is removed from the vehicle and completely disassembled. Each part is inspected for wear and damage and depending on its condition, either cleaned in a special solution or replaced. Certain parts (those that have friction surfaces, such as bands and clutches, seals, and gaskets, including the torque converter), are typically replaced.
  • Replacement: This option replaces the transmission with another rebuilt or remanufactured unit. Although this option is more expensive, you will get out of the shop and on your way much faster.
