How Often Should You Have Your Car Serviced?
If you are like a lot of drivers, you want to keep your current vehicle for as long as possible while avoiding expensive car repair at the same time. Do you know how often should you have your car serviced? Read your owner’s manual! Not only is it important to understand the service schedule listed there, but that you actually follow it!
There are a few other things that you can do for your car on a daily or weekly basis, such as:
Daily...
Before driving off for the day, take a quick walk around your car to make sure everything looks okay. Some things to look for include dents or dings in the paint or bodywork, condition of tires (air pressure, tread wear, cuts in the rubber), chips or cracks in the windows, and puddles under the car. Because many of these issues could cause serious problems, these few minutes could help prevent an accident!
Weekly...
- Check tire pressures, tread depth, and general condition of all four tires AND the spare.
- Check the level of fluids—oil, coolant/antifreeze, brakes, windshield washer, power steering.
- Check lightbulbs (exterior and interior)—make sure blinkers work properly, replace burned-out or broken bulbs and clean the lenses.
- Inspect your windshield wiper blades and consider replacing them if more than six months old.
- Inspect the bodywork for any serious damage that may cause a driving hazard.
- Check mirrors and windows for cracks or chips.
- Wash your vehicle, inside and out! Don’t forget the wax job! It will help protect the finish and repel water and dirt.
Remember: The time and effort you spend in performing these inspections will save you money on urgent car repair, plus it will give you peace of mind knowing you have reliable transportation.
