There is no way to tell exactly how long a tire will last. The lifespan and mileage of a tire depend on a combination of factors--design, the driver’s habits, climate, road conditions and the care that's put into the tires. Here are a few tips to keep in mind as you’re watching the miles add up on your tires:
- After 5 Years - After five years or so, your tires should be thoroughly inspected at least once per year by a professional tire repair technician.
- Maximum of 10 years - If the tires haven't been replaced 10 years after their date of manufacture, as a precaution, it’s time to replace them with new tires even if they appear to be in usable condition and have not worn down to the tread wear indicator. This applies to spare tires as well.
- Proper care - You can increase your tire's longevity by maintaining the correct air pressure, performing regular tire rotations and keepin your suspension system in good condition.
What is the proper care of your tires?
- Inspect your tires regularly. Look for uneven tread wear, shallow tread, rocks or nails in the tread, damaged areas, and damaged valve caps.
- Notice how your tires “feel” as you drive. A rough ride may indicate tire damage or excessive wear. If you notice vibrations or other disturbances while driving, immediately reduce speed, drive with caution until you can safely pull off the road and stop, and inspect your tires. If a tire is damaged, deflate it and replace it with your spare. If you do not see any tire damage and cannot identify the source of the vibration, take the vehicle to a tire dealer for a thorough inspection.
- Go to the tire professionals. If you’re not sure how much longer your tires will last, have them examined by an expert at your auto shop.
A word to the wise: Just a quick and simple tire service is one of the most critical and important aspects of vehicle ownership in order to maintain a safe vehicle.
