Express Auto Service & Repair

Many drivers are aware that the main function of the radiator is to keep the engine from overheating. How does it work, you wonder? The engine produces heat while it is operating. The coolant (a mixture of water and coolant) in the radiator circulates through the engine, cooling it down by absorbing this heat. It then passes back through the radiator where it is cooled off again, starting the cycle over.

How do you know when to replace a radiator, you ask? A properly maintained radiator should last for the life of your vehicle, at the least, up to eight to 10 years. Have your radiator and the coolant mixture inspected at every tire rotation or oil change service. Your mechanic should check the hoses for cracks or leaks, and for a buildup of sludge. It is a good idea to have the radiator flushed and refilled with fresh coolant about every two years.

There are some circumstances the radiator may need to be replaced to keep your car running safely. Here are a few examples:

  • Coolant leaking from a crack in the radiator unit or a hose so there is not enough coolant circulating to prevent overheating of the engine and radiator.
  • The radiator is clogged from debris and sludge build-up, prohibiting the flow of coolant.
  • The radiator becomes corroded from constant exposure to salt from the ocean or the roads.
  • The radiator is made from plastic instead of aluminum or steel.

Remember: Because the radiator plays a major role in keeping the engine cool, it is crucial that it is inspected and serviced frequently and any necessary radiator repair is taken care of as soon as possible.
