Exhaust System: The Silent Work Force!

The exhaust system is vital for the operating efficiency of your vehicle. It silently works behind the scenes without a thought from you, releasing the toxic gas by-products of internal combustion. The exhaust system goes unnoticed until strange noises, odors, or smoke start coming from the muffler. Unfortunately, by the time this happens, damage in the exhaust system has probably already occurred that will require some form of repair.
In addition to the normal aging process, there are two common causes of damage to the exhaust system and muffler:
• Road conditions: The muffler is exposed to damaging road conditions (such as salt or sand) because it is mounted on the underside of your car. If it is starting to get noisy, be sure to have the exhaust system inspected for leaks. A leaky exhaust system not only creates a noisy muffler, but also decreases fuel efficiency. Even more harmful are the toxic fumes, such as carbon monoxide, that can potentially enter the cabin of your car.
• Driving short distances: When driving short distances, such as your daily commute, the water vapor produced by the catalytic convertor doesn't have enough time to fully evaporate or get expelled. It condenses back into water, which can cause rust in the muffler if it just sits. Sulfer, another by-product of engine emissions, creates a corrosive acid when mixed with water that will eat away at the muffler.
A quick tip: To make sure the exhaust system stays in good shape, have it inspected at each oil change. Prevent further damage to the muffler, the environment, and your health, by taking care of any problems as soon as possible.
