Express Auto Service & Repair

Many drivers don't pay much attention to the various factors that affect the recommended interval between oil changes, relying on the little sticker in the window for their next oil change. However, one of the main factors that affect oil change intervals is driving style. AAA conducted a survey in which it was found that more than 50% of all motorists assume they typically drive in "normal" conditions. That is not always true!

How do you know if the oil change schedule recommended by your auto mechanic is correct? By understanding the difference between "normal" and "severe" driving, you can make an informed decision.

Is your driving "normal" or severe?"

Your owner's manual is the first place to check as a reliable source for the answer to this question. Most manufacturers will show two sets of maintenance schedules--one for "normal" driving and one for "severe" driving.

  • "Normal" Driving – For "normal" driving, the recommended oil change interval in your owner's manual will generally be between every 5,000 to 7,500 miles. This is based on ideal driving conditions–short distances, never over the speed limit, level roads, no load, etc. The average driver would have a hard time staying within the range of "normal" driving conditions.
  • "Severe" Driving – For "severe" driving, the typical recommendation is an oil change about every 3,000 miles. This includes changing the filter. The average driver will generally fall within this category—frequent short trips, driving in hot weather, stop-and-go traffic, transporting items on a roof-top carrier, towing a trailer, and driving through mountainous passes.

Remember: As Benjamin Franklin once said, "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure!" In other words, err on the side of caution and follow a schedule of oil changes of about every 3,000 miles. This will enhance and protect the performance and longevity of your vehicle.
