As they pass over the windshield, there should not be any skipping, squeaking, or streaking. All it takes is a winter rainstorm to turn worn-out wipers into serious safety hazards.

- Check the condition of your current wipers on a regular basis. Run your finger along the rubber edge. If it is rigid or chipped or produces nonstop streaking, you need new wipers. You could try cleaning the rubber with windshield washer fluid or mild dish soap. However, if they still are not working properly, it’s time to replace them. Don’t forget the rear wiper on a van or SUV.
- Over time, the rubber on wipers will deteriorate, even if you live in an area with very little rain. This could be about every six months (twice a year).

- If possible, buy the entire wiper assemblies, not just the blades.
