A Car Tune Up Pays Big Dividends!
A vehicle may be the second largest investment a person may ever make. A car tune up will protect that investment by restoring the performance of your engine's power. Therefore, it is important to know (and follow) the maintenance plan as recommended by the manufacturer.
But, you may be wondering, is a tune up still necessary in today's modern vehicles? Newer models of cars no longer have the components that were included as part of the traditional car tune up. A tune up today is defined as: "the periodic process of inspection, diagnosis, testing, and adjustment to maintain peak engine performance or restore the engine to original operating efficiency."
So even though today's car tune up may be defined a bit different than yesterday's, good vehicle maintenance is still necessary to ensure you get the maximum dependability from the vehicle you depend on.
- Yesterday's Tune up -- In older cars, adjustments to the ignition timing and fuel mixture; replacing the distributor cap, distributor rotor and ignition wires, and replacing spark plugs as recommended by the vehicle manufacturer.
- Today's Tune Up – Newer vehicles are controlled by computers that are not adjustable. So a tune up generally consists of replacing the fuel and air filters, new plugs and wires (unless it's coil-on-plug), possibly a fluid flush, cleaning the carbon out of the throttle body, and flushing the fuel injectors with a special solvent.
Your local auto mechanic can give you expert advice about the appropriate maintenance schedule for your specific vehicle and driving conditions.
Tip to Remember: For improved fuel economy, longer engine life, and a cleaner environment, a car tune up service is an investment that pays big dividends.
